Research
It is essential that the building regulations and guidance are based on solid information and the research programme is an integral part of the work of the division.
The SBS manages a programme of research to provide an evidence base to support the review of the Building Standards and other building regulations.
While the majority of research is commissioned from external bodies, the research team also undertakes small in-house projects as well as making use of research undertaken by other Government Departments. The SBS, where possible, look to work in partnership with other Scottish Government departments, Agencies and other Government Departments.
The SBS makes all its documents freely available on its web site.

Industry Symposium on Local Energy Centres - Wednesday 22 October 2008
This symposium was intended to inform Scottish Government and housing developers/designers about local energy centres, particularly small-medium scale district heating and CHP schemes. It was the first step towards supporting the recommendation in the Sullivan report ‘A low carbon building standards strategy for Scotland’ for “research to find ways to encourage low carbon energy centres for large developments and, where potential exists, in existing stock”.
Details of the presentations can be accessed here.
