When you have your home rewired

  • Ask the electrician to make sockets, switches, meters and consumer units easy to use by placing:
     
  • light switches in easy to reach places (not behind doors) at least 900mm (3') and no more than 1100mm (3'8") above floor level
     
  • sockets and other controls at least 400mm (1'4") and no more than 1200mm (4') above floor level in living rooms, bedrooms, halls.
     
  • Select large rocker switches for lights.
     
  • In houses, include a socket at a height of 500mm on the wall beside the foot of the stairs to make it easier to install a stair lift.
