Well insulated roof
basics principles

Heat rises — use roof insulation to keep heat inside your home!

Houses built since the 1960s usually have some insulation in the roof — but it’s much thicker in more modern houses. Older houses often have none at all, or it may be damaged and ineffective. Check your loft space and bring your home up to modern standards — you may be able to get a grant or your energy provider may offer to install insulation at low cost. Even lower storey flats can benefit if the roof is insulated.

Precautions for all roof insulation:

Fire safety
Don’t cover electrical cables or equipment with insulation — they could overheat and catch fire!

If there are downlighters recessed into the ceiling below the insulation, make a plasterboard box around each light or fit a fire hood to the back of the light to stop it overheating.

Ventilation
Allow air to circulate above the insulation to prevent condensation which damages the timber in the roof.

DIY suitable

Insulating the floor of a loft can be a DIY job, but energy companies can usually do it for you.

Easy to insulate: >> Unheated roof space under a pitched roof
Trickier to insulate: >> Heated room-in-the-roof and flat roofs

Savings [Savings information from EST]

You can insulate the floor of the loft yourself, but it’s better to have it done by professionals.

A house with 270mm (11") of loft insulation could typically save between £180 and £220 per year compared to a house with no loft insulation — savings vary with the type of fuel and the size of the house.

Grants

Scottish Executive Warm Deal grant scheme — insulation installed for people aged 60 or over and for people on some income related benefits.

The Scottish Executive has appointed Scottish Gas to run the Warm Deal scheme until 2008.
