Recycle

If you can’t re-use old equipment or materials, dispose of them responsibly

  • Take time to remove materials and equipment carefully, then sort for your council recycling facility. Sort materials into separate bins, skips or uplifts:

  • timber
  • bricks & blocks
  • tiles
  • glass
  • copper
  • cast iron & lead
  • baths, basins & toilets.

  • Only hire skips from authorised waste carriers — ask to see their documentation or check with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency at www.sepa.org.uk.

  • Make a rack to store household recycling boxes, either near the kitchen or at the point you put them out for collection — maybe you can make it with recycled wood or metal.

  • Donate carpets and beds to specialist recycling companies.

  • Donate sofas with fire safety labels to charities.

  • Keep partly used tins of paint to touch up marks, rather than repaint entirely or donate to a paint recycling scheme — never pour left-over paint down the drain because it can contaminate the water supply.

Tip

Call the council to dispose of old fridges and freezers who will remove the substances that damage the ozone layer.

Take smaller electrical and electronic equipment to your nearest community recycling centre.
