Make compost from waste

Get a composter to transform kitchen peelings, garden waste, and scraps of paper and card into compost to improve the soil — put it on a solid surface in a place where it’s easy to stir.

  • Balance ‘green’ and ‘brown’ — layer plant material with newspaper, egg cartons, junk-mail for a firm mixture.

  • Don’t add too much material that breaks down quickly, such as grass cuttings, which make the mixture slimy.

Tip

Leaves take longer to break down — find a corner to make leafmould to enrich the compost.
