Examples of what could be done in different types of Scottish homes

Traditional house or cottage

Short of space — just another room would mean the owners didn’t need to move.
Difficult to move around — steps to the front door, bathroom up a narrow stairway.
Windy — the wind rattles the windows and it’s difficult for anything to grow.
Water heating — electric immersion heater is costly to run in summer when range is off.

Traditional tenement flat

Kitchen — tiny, extract fan doesn’t clear steam, oven door hits wall, tatty cupboards and worktop.
Electrics — ancient sockets coming away from the wall, old fuse box.
Fire safety — no smoke alarm.
Room heating and water heating — electric fires, electric immersion heater.
Drying washing — clothes, sheets and towels take ages to dry on a clothes horse in the bedroom.
Floors — uneven boards, worn carpet.
Noise — downstairs neighbours hear washing machine in kitchen, people using shower-room.

1930s bungalow

Bathroom — everything still works but looks tired, stays damp, awkward to use.
Conservatory — too hot in summer, costs a fortune to heat in winter.
Windows — metal windows at the front and in the bathroom rusting, difficult to close.
Flat roof — roof over the kitchen extension is leaking badly, kitchen freezing in the morning.
Central heating — granny’s always turning the thermostat up high, everyone else is too hot.

1950s semi-detached house

Front door — a rush of cold air whenever the front door opens and no space to leave wet shoes.
French windows — great for summer but cold at night and in the winter.
Walls — render coating should protect walls from wind and rain but cracked, come away in places.
Heating — old electric storage heaters cost a lot, even on off-peak tariff — changing to a ground source heat pump means cutting down heat losses everywhere.
