Cut down on hard surfaces

Design your garden without hard surfaces that run rainwater off to mains drainage.

  • Where you don’t have plants, choose permeable surfaces that allow rainwater to soak away to the ground such as small pavers or stone slabs laid on sand, grids made of recycled plastic, or bark chippings.

  • For large areas and areas where water tends to lie, have permeable panels laid over a ‘swale’ — a pond to store the water before it drains away slowly to the ground in gravel soakaways.

  • Whether your patio and paths are hard or permeable, make sure they drain away from the building.

  • Keep paving clear of floor vents and lay it so that rainwater doesn’t splash under the floor. If there’s a damp proof course in the walls, paving should be at least 150mm (6") below it.
